Popular Nigerian comedian and content creator Carter Efe has stirred fresh controversy on social media after a disturbing statement directed at activist VeryDarkMan (VDM).

What he said

In a video circulating online, Carter Efe made a harsh declaration involving VeryDarkMan's mother, leaving many people asking how far social media disagreements should be allowed to go.

Speaking in Pidgin, he said, in effect: "VeryDarkMan, if you don't bring me down, your mother will die. Whatever your mother is looking for in this life, she will not find it."

The statement, which amounts to wishing death and misfortune on VDM's mother, has raised concerns about the kind of language being used in online confrontations.

When feuds go too far

Disagreements between public figures are nothing new in Nigeria. Celebrities exchange insults, make accusations and drag one another for days, and sometimes the whole thing turns into entertainment for their followers.

But bringing someone's mother into a personal disagreement, especially with words wishing her death or misfortune, is something many people consider completely unacceptable.

Whatever the disagreement between Carter Efe and VeryDarkMan may be, one question remains: what has VDM's mother got to do with it? These are parents who may know little or nothing about the arguments their children are having online.

No explanation yet

At the time of writing, Carter Efe has not publicly explained what led him to make the statement.

Over to you

Has Carter Efe taken this disagreement too far, or do you believe his words are being taken out of context?

"Go and work, I have children to take care of!": GehGeh sends strong message to his siblings and critics

Social media personality and financial adviser GehGeh has told his brothers and sisters to work hard and stop depending entirely on him, saying he has children to care for. His message has reopened a familiar debate about the pressure Nigerian families put on relatives who become successful.

Popular Nigerian social media personality and financial adviser GehGeh has stirred reactions online after sending a strong message to his family members and to those who believe he should carry the financial responsibilities of everyone around him.

"Go and work"

Speaking openly about the pressure that comes with financial success, GehGeh made it clear that having money does not mean one person should become the permanent provider for an entire family.

According to him, his brothers and sisters must learn to work hard and take responsibility for their own lives rather than depending entirely on him.

"If you're my brother or my sister, go and work. Don't depend only on me because I have children I need to take care of. I can't do more than my power for family members," he said.

A familiar Nigerian story

His message touches on something many Nigerians can relate to, especially those who have become financially stable while other relatives continue to struggle.

In many families, once one person starts making money, expectations begin to grow. School fees, house rent, feeding allowances, business capital and even personal expenses suddenly become that person's responsibility. Sometimes the demands never seem to end.

Drawing the line

GehGeh appears determined to draw a line. He did not suggest that helping relatives is wrong, but his message was clear: family support should have limits, particularly when someone has children and responsibilities of their own.

His remarks also highlight the pressure successful people face from relatives who believe family ties automatically guarantee financial support.

Family members should help one another whenever they can. But should one person's success become an excuse for everyone else to stop trying?

Over to you

Is GehGeh being too harsh on his family, or is he simply saying what many successful people are afraid to tell their relatives?

Tinubu asks Senate to approve $7.7bn foreign borrowing for 2026 budget

President Tinubu has asked the Senate to approve $7.7 billion in new external borrowing, about ₦10.79 trillion, mainly through Eurobonds and loans from international lenders. He said it would fund the 2026 budget and support the naira.

President Bola Tinubu has asked the Senate to approve fresh external borrowing of $7.7 billion to help finance the 2026 budget.

The request

The request was contained in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during plenary on Wednesday, 4 November 2026. At the budget exchange rate of ₦1,400 to the dollar, the amount is equal to about ₦10.79 trillion. According to the letter, the money would be raised mainly through Eurobond issuance, as well as loans from multilateral and bilateral lenders, international financial institutions and syndicated loans. The President said the borrowing would help finance the budget, strengthen foreign reserves and support the stability of the naira. He also asked the Senate to authorise the Minister of Finance and the Debt Management Office to carry out the plan.

What the Senate did

Akpabio said the new request appeared to replace an earlier borrowing proposal and gave more detail on where the money would come from. He referred it to the Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debts for consideration and a report.

Background

Nigeria's public debt has risen sharply in recent years, and borrowing has become a major political issue ahead of the 2027 elections. Last week, former President Olusegun Obasanjo described the government's borrowing as 'absolute nonsense', while opposition candidates have warned that debt servicing is taking up too much of government revenue. The government says borrowing is needed to fund infrastructure and that its reforms have improved Nigeria's credit rating and ability to raise money abroad.

What happens next

The Senate committee is expected to review the request before the full Senate votes on it.

Tinubu says he drove a taxi to pay for his education in the United States

President Tinubu says he drove a taxi and took other jobs in the US to fund his university education, and even delayed starting school to save money. He linked the experience to his government's student loan scheme.

President Bola Tinubu has shared how he worked to pay for his university education in the United States, saying the experience shaped his government's education policies.

What he said

In a post on his official X account on Wednesday, 4 November 2026, the President said that when he arrived in the US as a young man, he drove a taxi to earn money for his education, and even had to postpone starting school for several months to save enough. He said he did several other jobs while studying.

The policy link

Tinubu connected his personal story to his administration's education programmes, pointing to the student loan scheme, investment in medical schools and increased enrolment in nursing training as evidence of efforts to widen access to education.

Background

The President studied accounting at Chicago State University, graduating in 1979. On Tuesday, Education Minister Tunji Alausa said Tinubu graduated with a first class and described him as a genius, urging Nigerians to ignore opposition questions about his academic record. The Supreme Court dismissed petitions challenging the President's 2023 election, including claims about his certificates. The Nigerian Education Loan Fund, set up in 2024, provides interest-free loans to students in public tertiary institutions.

How people reacted

Supporters said the story showed the President understood the struggles of young Nigerians, while critics said many students still face high fees and limited opportunities despite the loan scheme.

VeryDarkMan dares Davido's camp to show proof of help, warns Zlatan

VeryDarkMan has challenged Davido's associates to show receipts after a social media user claimed the singer once put him up in a Lagos hotel. He also warned Zlatan after Davido was filmed singing along to lyrics believed to target him at Zlatan's wedding party.

The feud between social media activist VeryDarkMan (VDM) and singer Davido has flared up again.

The receipts challenge

On Wednesday, 4 November 2026, VDM shared on his Instagram stories a screenshot of a post by an X user who claimed Davido had once flown him to Lagos, put him up in a five-star hotel and helped him rise to fame. VDM reportedly dismissed the claim and dared Davido or his team to produce proof of any financial support.

Warning to Zlatan

VDM also reacted angrily to a video from Zlatan Ibile's wedding welcome party in Morocco, in which Davido was seen singing along to lyrics from Zlatan's song 'Inferno', which fans believe is aimed at VDM. In a video, VDM criticised Davido and warned Zlatan that he would learn the hard way, saying he would not take the matter lightly. He also stood by recent controversial comments about his private life that had drawn reactions online.

Background

VDM and Davido were once close, but their relationship broke down earlier this year. Davido recently unfollowed VDM on Instagram and publicly congratulated Zlatan on the success of 'Inferno', which topped the Apple Music Nigeria chart. Comedian GehGeh this week urged Carter Efe not to fight other people's battles amid the wider VDM controversy.

How people reacted

Fans were divided, with some backing VDM and others saying he should move on from the feud.
