Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu surprised fashion lovers by taking to the runway at Lagos Fashion Week on Saturday night, 31 October 2026.

What happened

The governor modelled a native outfit from the collection of designer Ugo Monye, walking the catwalk to loud cheers from the audience. At the end of the show, he returned to the runway with the designer, and the two shook hands and walked out together to applause.

What he said

Sanwo-Olu shared footage of the moment on his social media pages, describing it as a welcome break from his usual work and calling himself a part-time model for the night. He said he had a really good time and congratulated the designer and everyone working to make Lagos a hub of creativity, fashion and talent.

How people reacted

The video drew warm and humorous reactions. Actress Funke Akindele described it as dope, while broadcaster Do2dtun praised the governor for supporting the entertainment industry. Other users joked that the governor had found a side hustle.

Background

Lagos Fashion Week is one of Africa's biggest fashion events and showcases designers from Nigeria and across the continent. Sanwo-Olu, who is serving his second and final term, often appears at cultural and entertainment events in the state and has promoted Lagos as a centre for the creative economy. Earlier this week, a video of him giving flowers to his wife also went viral.

Pastor Jimmy Odukoya introduces new wife as Fountain of Life Church welcomes another 'Mummy G.O.'

Pastor Jimmy Odukoya, Senior Pastor of The Fountain of Life Church, has reportedly introduced his new wife to the congregation. The news has revived an old debate about how Nigerian churches treat divorce among their leaders compared with ordinary members.

Pastor Jimmy Odukoya, the Senior Pastor of The Fountain of Life Church, has reportedly introduced his new wife to the congregation, bringing fresh attention to his personal life and to the church's leadership.

Photos from the occasion show the couple dressed in matching red outfits, smiling together on the church stage.

Background

For those who may not know, Pastor Jimmy was previously married to Kemi Odukoya, and the marriage produced two children. That marriage reportedly ended some years ago.

His sister, who also serves as an associate pastor in the church, has spoken publicly about the breakdown of her own marriage, including her personal experiences and how her faith in God carried her through that difficult period.

The Fountain of Life Church was founded by their late parents, Pastors Taiwo and Bimbo Odukoya, and the children have continued the family's ministry.

A question about double standards

The news raises a question about how marriage and divorce are discussed in some Nigerian churches.

Many religious institutions regularly remind ordinary members that marriage is sacred and that the Bible says God hates divorce. Some believers are even made to feel guilty for leaving marriages that have become unbearable.

Yet when divorce happens within prominent pastoral families, the conversation often becomes more understanding. Suddenly, people are encouraged to consider personal circumstances, healing, forgiveness and new beginnings.

Perhaps they should. Pastors are human beings too. But shouldn't ordinary church members receive that same understanding?

Finding love again

There is nothing wrong with anyone finding love again after a failed marriage. The concern is the apparent gap between what some churches preach to their members and how they respond when their own leaders face similar situations.

So the question is this: if divorce can be understood and accepted when it involves church leaders, why should ordinary Christians sometimes be made to feel condemned for the same decision?

Federal government's CREDICORP unveils SPARK loans for people without smartphones

The Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation has unveiled SPARK, a credit product that lets people borrow through USSD on basic mobile phones, without internet access. It is aimed at first-time and low-income borrowers and is expected to be widely available before the end of 2026.

Nigerians without smartphones or internet access may soon be able to borrow money through a new government-backed scheme.

What was unveiled

The Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP) launched SPARK at a 'CREDICORP for All' event in Aba, Abia State, attended by more than 1,000 residents, according to reports on Sunday, 1 November 2026. The product works on USSD, the basic mobile service available on simple feature phones, allowing eligible users to start credit transactions without a data connection.

Who it is for

SPARK is aimed at first-time borrowers, low-income earners and others who are poorly served by traditional banks. CREDICORP says it will also help users build formal credit histories by borrowing and repaying responsibly. Loan sizes, interest rates and eligibility rules were not disclosed, and the USSD code has not yet been published. CREDICORP expects the product to be widely available before the end of 2026.

Who spoke

CREDICORP's chief executive, Uzoma Nwagba, spoke at the event, along with a representative of Abia Governor Alex Otti and an official of the Ministry of Finance Incorporated.

Background

CREDICORP was set up in 2024 to expand access to consumer credit, so that Nigerians can buy goods such as phones, solar systems and household items and pay over time. Many Nigerians rely on online loan apps, some of which have been criticised for high interest rates and harsh debt-recovery methods.

A warning

Officials urged people to wait for official announcements and to avoid unverified platforms claiming to register people for SPARK loans.

UK splits post-study work visa into two tiers from 2027

The UK is changing its Graduate visa from January 2027: most bachelor's and master's graduates will get 18 months instead of two years, while graduates of universities with strong compliance and job records will keep two years. Nigerians are among the biggest users of the route.

Nigerian students planning to study in the United Kingdom will face new rules on how long they can stay and work after graduation, under changes announced in the UK government's 2026 Budget.

What is changing

From 1 January 2027, the Graduate visa will reportedly be split into two tiers. Most bachelor's and master's graduates will be allowed 18 months to stay and work, down from two years. Graduates of universities with strong immigration compliance records and good graduate job outcomes will keep two years. Doctoral graduates will keep their existing three years. Applications submitted before 1 January 2027 will be decided under the current rules.

Unanswered questions

The UK government has not yet published the list of qualifying universities or the exact criteria that will be used. The change partly reverses an earlier plan to cut the visa to 18 months for everyone.

Why it matters for Nigerians

Nigeria was the third-largest source of sponsored study visas to the UK in the year to June 2026, with more than 26,000 main applicants, behind only China and India. More than 20,000 Nigerians were granted permission on the Graduate route in the same period. Prospective students are being advised to check a university's immigration compliance record and graduate employment outcomes, as well as fees and reputation.

Background

The Graduate visa cannot be extended, so graduates who want to stay longer must switch to another route, such as the Skilled Worker visa. The UK has tightened immigration rules in recent years, including restrictions on bringing family members on student visas.

South-East governors urge region to back Tinubu at APC women's rally in Enugu

The governors of Enugu, Imo and Ebonyi, and a representative of Anambra's governor, have reportedly urged South-East voters to support President Tinubu's re-election at an APC women's rally in Enugu. The call sets up a direct contest with Peter Obi in his home region.

Four South-East state governments have thrown their weight behind President Bola Tinubu's re-election bid, in a show of support in a region widely seen as Peter Obi's stronghold.

What happened

At an APC Women Mega Rally and Empowerment Programme for the South-East at Okpara Square, Enugu, on Saturday, 31 October 2026, the governors reportedly urged residents to back the President and APC candidates at all levels in the January 2027 elections.

What the governors said

Enugu Governor Peter Mbah said the region should build on the government's economic reforms rather than change course, comparing it to a sailor who does not abandon his ship mid-sea. He also described an empowerment programme for 5,000 women across the five South-East states. Imo Governor Hope Uzodimma said Igbo people were now seeing real inclusion and development under Tinubu, and that improved federal allocations had helped his state pay salaries and pensions regularly. Ebonyi Governor Francis Nwifuru praised the APC's skills programmes and denied links to any coalition outside the party. Anambra Governor Charles Soludo was represented by his deputy, Gilbert Ibezim, who said the region should repay the administration with votes. Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu also spoke, noting that no Igbo person had been president in six decades and praising the South East Development Commission.

Background

Peter Obi, the NDC presidential candidate and a former Anambra governor, won most of the South East in the 2023 presidential election. He has said he would serve only one term if elected, while some APC figures argue the region should aim for a longer stay in power through alliances. Obi had not responded to the rally at the time of the report.

What happens next

Both the APC and the NDC are expected to intensify their campaigns in the South East, which is likely to be one of the most closely watched regions in the election.
