Nigerian gospel singer and pastor Nathaniel Bassey has reached a milestone no other African gospel artist has achieved, according to reports on Monday, 2 November 2026.

The milestone

His main YouTube channel had passed 1.014 billion views at the time of reporting, with about 5.24 million subscribers. The channel has been active since 2011. Among his most popular songs are 'Imela', 'Onise Iyanu', 'Olowogbogboro' and 'You Are God', which are sung in churches across Nigeria and the diaspora.

The Hallelujah Challenge

The milestone came during the October 2026 edition of the Hallelujah Challenge, the midnight prayer and worship programme Bassey started in 2017. It runs twice a year and draws huge online audiences, with many viewers joining live on Instagram and YouTube. Earlier this week, a plane crash survivor shared a testimony during the programme, and a Muslim woman's decision to join drew attention online.

A non-commercial approach

Some of Bassey's followers have suggested he should make money from the large audience. He has previously described the Hallelujah Challenge as a spiritual exercise focused on devotion and worship rather than revenue. He did not give a public statement about the milestone at the time of reporting.

Background

Bassey, who is also a trumpeter, has become one of the best-known voices in Nigerian worship music. His success shows the growing global reach of Nigerian gospel music, which has produced several international stars in recent years.

How fans reacted

Fans celebrated the news online, describing it as a proud moment for African gospel music.

Groom reportedly walks out of wedding in Imo State after bride's family demands ₦1.2 million bride price

What was supposed to be a beautiful celebration of love reportedly took an unexpected turn in Mbaise, Imo State, after a groom allegedly walked away from his bride and their traditional wedding arrangements.

What reportedly happened

According to reports circulating online, trouble began when the bride's family demanded ₦1.2 million as bride price, a sum that reportedly did not sit well with the groom.

Rather than go ahead with the marriage under those conditions, the man allegedly called everything off, leaving the bride and both families in an embarrassing situation.

The cost of getting married

The incident has raised fresh questions about the financial demands sometimes placed on intending couples during traditional marriage ceremonies.

Some people believe families have every right to uphold their marriage customs. Others argue that excessive financial demands can discourage young people who genuinely want to settle down.

The full circumstances of the reported incident, including whether the ₦1.2 million covered only the bride price or other traditional marriage expenses as well, have not been independently confirmed, and the people involved have not been identified.

Over to you

Should a man walk away from a marriage because of expensive traditional demands, or should both families find a way to reach an agreement?

What would you do if you were in his shoes?

President Bola Tinubu has hosted senior government officials, state governors and business leaders at a dinner in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, during his Umrah pilgrimage.

According to a statement by the President's adviser on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Sunday, 1 November 2026, those at the dinner included Yobe Governor Mai Mala Buni, Kaduna Governor Uba Sani, Jigawa Governor Mohammed Namadi, Sokoto Governor Ahmed Aliyu and Borno Governor Babagana Zulum. Also present were National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, Health Minister Muhammad Ali Pate, political adviser Ibrahim Masari and Oando chief executive Wale Tinubu. Kwara Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq, BUA chairman Abdul Samad Rabiu and Attorney-General Lateef Fagbemi also spoke at the event.

What the President said

Tinubu reportedly prayed for peace, unity and prosperity in Nigeria and urged Nigerians to see the country's ethnic, religious and cultural diversity as a strength. He said Nigeria's people and natural resources provide a foundation for an inclusive and prosperous nation, and asked God to turn the country's diversity into prosperity. Guests offered prayers for the President and the country.

Background

Tinubu travelled to Saudi Arabia on 29 October for the Umrah pilgrimage. The trip has been criticised by opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar, who claimed it was a cover for travel to France, and activist Omoyele Sowore, who claimed it was for medical treatment. The Presidency has rejected both claims. It says the President is expected back in Nigeria this week.

How people reacted

Supporters shared photos of the dinner as evidence of the President's good health, while critics questioned the cost of taking a large delegation abroad.

Seun Okinbaloye says his 2027 rigging warning named no party or candidate

Channels TV anchor Seun Okinbaloye has clarified his widely shared warning about rigging in the 2027 elections, saying it did not accuse any party, candidate or sponsor. Reactions remain divided, with some praising his courage and others accusing him of backtracking.

Popular Channels Television anchor Seun Okinbaloye has responded to the storm over his recent comments on election rigging ahead of 2027.

What he said

Speaking on the channel on Sunday, 1 November 2026, Okinbaloye said his earlier remarks had been widely misread. He said his warning had named no political party, accused no candidate and identified no sponsor. Critics had interpreted his original comments as a claim that rigging of the 2027 elections had already begun.

Background

Okinbaloye's original warning went viral last week, coming amid wider concerns about the integrity of the voter register after INEC admitted that some of its registration officers had entered AI-generated photos. Opposition candidates, including Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, have called for audits and promised to prosecute anyone involved in rigging. INEC says the register is still being cleaned up and will be certified in December.

How people reacted

Opinion was divided. Some viewers praised the anchor for speaking out and for clarifying his position, saying he was simply doing his job as a journalist. Others accused him of damage control and asked why he had not named those he believed were planning to rig. Several users said INEC itself should identify and prosecute staff involved in irregularities in the register.

Why it matters

Okinbaloye presents one of Nigeria's most-watched political programmes, and his comments carry weight with voters and politicians alike. The debate shows how sensitive questions about election credibility have become as campaigning intensifies.

Nollywood actor Yul Edochie appears to have answered rumours about the state of his marriage to actress Judy Austin with a romantic video.

What they posted

On Sunday, 1 November 2026, Yul shared an Instagram video of himself and Judy relaxing together on a night out, wishing fans a happy new month. Judy also shared footage from the date night, describing him as her partner for life. Neither addressed the rumours directly.

The rumours

The couple had been unusually quiet on social media in recent weeks, which led some fans to speculate that they had split. Some even linked Yul to another actress after he attended her birthday party, claims that were never confirmed.

How people reacted

Reactions were mixed. Some fans welcomed the video and said it put the rumours to rest, while others questioned whether the couple were truly happy and described the post as damage control. Yul also drew criticism this week for reposting a fan-made video about his life that included footage of his first wife, May Edochie.

Background

Yul Edochie, the son of veteran actor Pete Edochie, announced in 2022 that he had taken Judy Austin as a second wife, sparking a long public dispute with May Edochie, his first wife. May later went to court over the marriage, and the matter has remained a talking point among Nollywood fans. Yul also defended polygamy this week in a discussion about a US pastor's second marriage.
