Nollywood actress and filmmaker Mary Njoku has publicly questioned the head of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, over continuing concerns about fake and unsafe products in Nigeria.

What she said

In a social media post on Wednesday, 4 November 2026, Njoku recalled the NAFDAC chief's laughter during a recent food safety controversy, which she said she would never forget, and asked whether Nigerians are actually safe now. She criticised what she described as a familiar Nigerian cycle in which people raise an alarm, nothing is resolved, and attention moves to the next controversy. She also asked whether ordinary people now need special expertise to know whether their food is safe.

Background

Food safety has been a major public concern in Nigeria this year, with reports of fake and expired products, altered expiry dates and contaminated foods. This week, police in Kano arrested traders accused of changing expiry dates on milk, and a processor in Ondo was arrested over unhygienic food handling. NAFDAC has carried out raids and destroyed large quantities of unsafe products, but critics say enforcement remains weak.

Who is Mary Njoku

Mary Njoku is an actress, producer and the founder of the ROK Studios film company, which she sold to the French broadcaster Canal+ in 2019. She remains one of Nollywood's most influential figures.

How people reacted

Many Nigerians agreed with her, sharing their own fears about unsafe products, while others urged consumers to report suspicious goods to the agency. NAFDAC had not responded publicly at the time of reporting.
