Nigeria's under-17 women's team, the Flamingos, are into the semi-finals of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Morocco.

The match

The Flamingos beat Venezuela 1-0 in the quarter-final on Sunday, 1 November 2026, at the Mohammed VI Football Academy in Salé. Captain Azeezat Oduntan scored the winner from the penalty spot in the 89th minute after Oluebube Umejiaku was fouled in the box, a decision confirmed by a VAR review.

What comes next

Nigeria will face Brazil in the semi-final on Wednesday, 4 November, at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat. They are the only African side left in the competition after Ghana lost 1-0 to Japan in their quarter-final.

Reactions

The Confederation of African Football congratulated the team on social media, celebrating their place in the last four. Nigerian fans also shared videos of the players dancing and celebrating after earlier victories in the tournament.

Background

Nigeria has a strong record in women's youth football and has reached the later stages of age-group World Cups several times. The senior team, the Super Falcons, are the most successful side in African women's football and won another Women's Africa Cup of Nations title this year. The Flamingos' run has raised hopes of Nigeria's first-ever U-17 women's world title.

Havertz goal gives Arsenal first league win at Anfield in 14 years, sends them top

Arsenal beat Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield on Sunday through Kai Havertz's early goal, moving to the top of the Premier League with 24 points. It was the Gunners' first league win at Anfield in 14 years.

Arsenal have moved to the top of the Premier League after ending a long wait for a league win at Anfield.

The match

Kai Havertz scored the only goal in the 16th minute on Sunday, 1 November 2026, turning in a cross from Declan Rice at the back post. Liverpool controlled long spells of the game and pushed hard for an equaliser, with two penalty appeals turned down and Florian Wirtz hitting the crossbar from a free-kick. Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya denied Alexander Isak, while at the other end Alisson made a late save to stop substitute Christos Tzolis from doubling the lead.

The table

The result takes Arsenal to 24 points, three ahead of Manchester City, who reportedly lost to Brighton on the same day. It was Arsenal's first league win at Anfield in 14 years, ending a run of 13 league visits without victory.

What Arteta said

Manager Mikel Arteta told the BBC that the win was for everyone connected to the club and that 14 years without a victory at Anfield was a long time. He praised his players' performance but said it was too early to talk about the title race, adding that the team would now prepare for a big European match in Prague.

Why it matters

Arsenal have finished as runners-up in recent seasons and are hoping to win their first league title since 2004. The win at one of the hardest grounds in English football will boost their belief, while Liverpool will be disappointed not to have taken anything from a game they dominated for long periods.

A private jet carrying nine people crashed beside a road in Palm Beach County, Florida, on Sunday, 1 November 2026, killing everyone on board in a fireball that was caught on video by passing motorists.

What happened

US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the Learjet 60 went down at about 12.50pm local time and described the crash as a horrific tragedy. The aircraft had taken off from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was flying to the Bahamas. Florida governor Ron DeSantis said there were no immediate reports of anyone on the ground being hurt, and described the crash as cataclysmic, saying the plane looked like a missile coming down and left a large crater by the roadside. Reports said the site was a few miles from President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate.

The final minutes

According to air traffic control recordings and flight tracking data, the jet was cruising at about 35,000 feet when the pilots reported light ice, moderate turbulence and rain, and asked to climb a further 2,000 feet. Shortly afterwards the plane went into a steep dive. The pilot declared a mayday, reporting that the aircraft was descending at 10,000 and then 20,000 feet per minute in an overspeed condition, before saying the jet was going to crash. Tracking data showed the rate of descent at one point exceeded 32,000 feet per minute.

The investigation

The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation, supported by a team from the Federal Aviation Administration. The airport confirmed it was a private flight but did not say who was on board. Records list the plane's owner as a company registered in Delaware. Heavy rain had hit the region on Sunday, and a flood watch was in place until Monday afternoon.

What happens next

Investigators are expected to examine the wreckage, the weather and the aircraft's maintenance history. The names of the victims have not yet been released.

Peller apologises after calling himself Jesus Christ on livestream

Streamer Peller has apologised after a livestream clip showed him in a white costume asking a guest to call him Jesus Christ. The guest objected on camera, and many viewers said his apology did not go far enough.

Popular streamer Habeeb Adelaja, known as Peller, has apologised after a clip from his livestream in which he referred to himself as Jesus Christ drew widespread criticism.

What happened

In the clip, which spread online on Sunday, 1 November 2026, Peller appeared in a white and red costume with a wig and greeted his guest as Jesus Christ. The guest refused to go along with the joke and told him not to disrespect any religion, pointing out that someone with about 17 million followers had a responsibility to the people watching. Peller argued that he was only wearing a costume and that nobody alive knows what Jesus looked like. During the exchange he also said he was a traditionalist and joked about dressing as an Imam the next day, which the people with him warned was only making things worse.

The apology

In a follow-up video posted the same day, Peller said he had not expected the outfit to cause such a reaction, describing it as just a white cloth. He described himself as both a Christian and a Muslim, apparently to show that he meant no offence to either faith, and asked his fans to forgive him.

How people reacted

Many social media users criticised the stunt, saying religion should not be used for content. Some said the apology fell short because he did not clearly admit he was wrong, while others defended him as a young entertainer who made a mistake.

Background

Peller, one of Nigeria's best-known TikTok streamers, is often in the news for his livestreams. Last week, rapper YCee used his name as an example of what he called brain-rot content and refused to apologise for it. Peller and fellow content creator Jarvis held a white wedding in Lekki, Lagos, in August.

Toluwanising burial row resolved as widow and father agree, Woli Arole calls for calm

A close associate of the late gospel singer Toluwanising says his widow and father have agreed to bury him at his Ibadan house, ending their dispute. Comedian-turned-pastor Woli Arole has urged people to stop using the singer's death for online attention.

The dispute over where gospel singer Toluwanising should be buried appears to have been settled, according to one of his closest colleagues.

The agreement

In an Instagram video shared on Sunday, 1 November 2026, singer Lanre Alewilese said the widow, Damilola Olayemi, and her father-in-law had agreed that the singer should be buried at his house in Ibadan, Oyo State. He described the disagreement as a misunderstanding and asked Nigerians to let the family settle the matter in peace. He also appealed to people to stop attacking the widow, describing her as a young woman going through a very difficult time, and said members of the singer's band could vouch for her character.

Woli Arole speaks

On Monday, 2 November, comedian-turned-pastor Bayegun Oluwatoyin, known as Woli Arole, posted a video in which he condemned people seeking social media attention from the tragedy. Quoting Proverbs 31:8 on speaking up for those who cannot speak for themselves, he described Toluwanising as a rare talent, and questioned why some of those now talking about him had shown little interest in his music while he was alive. He urged the public to support the widow and children, and said no dispute could take away the music the singer left behind. His comments came after unproven claims made online by a preacher based in Canada named him and other gospel figures in connection with the death.

Background

Toluwanising, 32, died suddenly on 14 October 2026, and a night of tributes was held for him in Ibadan on 27 October. His father had insisted that he be buried at the family residence or in his hometown near his late mother, and relatives had claimed that the widow preferred a cemetery. His younger brother later defended the widow, as did media personality Nancy Umeh.

What happens next

A burial date has not yet been announced.
