Court jails five for illegal mining in Niger

A Federal Excessive Court sitting in Minna, Niger Instruct, has sentenced 5 males to one 300 and sixty five days in penal advanced for illegal mining.

Justice Abdullahi M. Dan-Ige found out the defendants, Yusuf Amadu, Babila Sani, Ibrahim Umar, Ephraim Jonas Okoro, and Saidu Mohammed, responsible of illegally possessing and mining precious stones with out a license.

The males were prosecuted by the Kaduna Zonal Directorate of the Financial and Financial Crimes Rate (EFCC) on separate one-depend prices below the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act, 2007.

In conserving with EFCC, the convicts were arrested in November 2024 in Minna and Kacha Native Authorities Areas of Niger Instruct, following credible intelligence that published their illegal activities.

Amadu’s price reads: “That you, Yusuf Amadu on or about 14th November, 2024 in Kacha, Minna, Niger Instruct, inner the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court had on your possession, precious stones with out licence and also you there by dedicated an offence contrary to Half 131(d) of the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act, 2007 and punishable below Half 134(b) of the same Act.”

That of Umar reads: “That you, of Ibrahim Umar, male, one day in November, 2024 in Minna, Niger Instruct inner the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court had on your possession, precious stones with out licence and also you thereby dedicated an offence contrary to Half 131(d) of the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act, 2007 and punishable below Half 134(b) of the same Act.”

All 5 pleaded responsible to the prices. The prosecution counsel Okay.S Ogunlade requested the court to convict and sentence them accordingly, while the defence counsel pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy, mentioning that the offenders in discovering remorse for their actions.
